The Catholic Church's teaching, that there is No Salvation Outside the Church, seems to have become quite controversial with some understanding it in a very literal sense. Others try to erase it from history altogether, claiming that the Church has changed her teaching, (particularly at Vatican II). Here, I will address this controversy, arguing that the teaching did not change, the circumstances did. To address these circumstances, in a post-Reformation/Enlightenment world, the Church had to vary the expression of this Dogma, adding the important qualifier, "many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside of its visible structure."
